The Gospel of John

Te Dyspraxic Fundamentalist blogger has suggested that I read the gospel of John. I am going to do this! I will post a verse, several verses or paragraphs every day (if I have the time and remember) and think about what it says. If you want to help me think about it and understand, that would be welcome. Here goes:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

This is about Jesus, right? When it says in the beginning was the Word, I assume that because it was capitalized, that means it is referring to Deity. Am I right about this? So, is it saying that Jesus was God? This is what the Catholics tell me. That is some pretty powerful wording there. I wonder what He looked like. I mean, He wasn't born until 2000 years ago, but this goes way back to "the beginning". Did He have a body? This gives me a lot to think about.

Yes, it is talking about Jesus. The Catholic Church is absolutely right in affirming that Jesus is God.

Yes, He had a body. This passage goes on to explain how the Word (Jesus) became flesh, sorry to skip ahead, that is take obn a human body.

He did not cease to be God, but He added a body to His nature. Not easy to understand, I know, but that is like a lot of things in life.

As for what He looked like, nobody knows. It does not really matter. It is more important to concentrate on what He did.

Well done for making the effort to read this most excellent book.

Hi DF,
Thanks for the comment.

What I meant was, "I wonder what He looked like - before the manger etc..." "Did He have a body - or was He a Spirit floating around, like God"

I don't know why I need to think like that, but I am curious. Is this one of those "mysteries"? Probably.

Well, God is spirit and has no body by nature.

There are reasons for thinking that Jesus had an angels body before He became human. Of course, it is not clear exactly what an angels look like exactly. The Son of God certainly did appear to people in human form several times in the Old Testament.

What is most important is recognising that Jesus is both God and human. He is not half of one and half of the other, but both at the same time.

I say 'is', because Christ is still human. He is in heaven, but is going to return. That is why the Catholics are so wrong in thinking he turns into wine and wafers every day, no offence to you mother meant.

God Bless

Jesus had an angel's body? He appeared in the OT// Wow. This is all new to me. I never heard that before. I look forward to reading about that eventualy, if I have extra time.

The Catholic teaching of the Eucharist is just weird to me. I don't know why God would want me to believe that. The host obviously is not flesh when I eat it. It is so weird.

Rosie,

If you want to look at Jesus in the Old Testament, you will see Him in Daniel 3:25. Here you will see Jesus walking in the fire with those who belong to God. These three servants of God were now facing their most terrible trial, and Jesus was there to go through it with them. Jesus is like that you know.

One day you will be like that too- helping people through trials, and they will thank the Lord for sending a servant of Christ like yourself into their lives.

Hello bluecollar,
You look like you are about the age of my dad when he died. I bet you are. Well, how nice to have you come over.

Jesus in the Old Testament? I am just floored by that idea. When I get done with the book of John, I will check that out, or maybe sooner.

Are you a prophet? You must be from the future, saying what I will "one day be like." I would be surprised if I could be anything like what you say. I am not really very much of a person.
Thanks, though. Come back again.
